MONTPELIER - Mae V. Nelmes, 91, passed away at the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital
Skilled Nursing Facility on Monday, October 17, 2011. She was born May 6, 1920, in
Wells, Mich., the youngest of 13 children. She was adopted and raised by the Etsy family
Mae graduated from high school in Wells, Michigan, and later in life went on to
Centralia College in Washington state and was awarded her licensed practical nursing
degree. She worked in the health care field most of her life and cared for many people.
Before her health care career she worked at Kellogg's and was on one of the first
lines to make Grape Nuts Cereal.
Mae was a devout Christian and always sang in the church choir. She had faith in the
Lord Jesus Christ and belonged to the Bear Lake Valley Bible Church. She always held many
positions in her church, including Sunday school, training unions for intermediate youth
and nursery positions. She often cooked and served food for various church activities.
She liked to embroider and still did so up until two months ago. Mae was also an avid
bowler and won many trophies.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 13 brothers and sisters, her
daughter, Patricia Ann Eager, and her son-in-law, Charles Collie. She is survived by her
daughter, Laurel (Paul) Freestone, Kalamazoo, Mich., Jacquelyn Collie, Montpelier; three
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing
Facilities Chapel in Montpelier, Idaho, on Friday, October 21, 2011, at 3 p.m. A
visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at 2 p.m.
