POCATELLO - Verna E. Black, 91, died Friday, November 20, 2009, at her home with
family by her side. She was born April 15, 1918, in Niter, Idaho, to David Hyrum Miles
and Ida May Miles. Verna was raised on the family farm in Niter and Chesterfield, Idaho.
She learned how to cook, and help take care of her sister and brothers. She also helped
her father do farm work. As a teenager she got jobs cooking for some of their neighbors
during roundups and harvest.
She met Burton Payne and on July 18, 1936, they were married. They lived in Idaho and
Utah. She was employed at American Linen for many years. Burton died April 23, 1967. She
then met Joseph Black. They were married in Ely, Nevada, March 4, 1971. They lived in Utah
and Idaho. When Joe retired they were able to travel and see a lot of country together.
Joe passed away on June 15, 1995.
Verna enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, crocheting and passed a lot of these talents
on to her family. She loved to be with her family and they loved to be with her. She was
deeply loved by all her family and will be missed.
Verna is survived by her daughters, Diana Burton of Ogden, Utah; two stepdaughters,
Elaine B. Burke of Sheridan, Wyo., and Karen B. Wolfe of Ogden, Utah; two stepsons, Evan
J. Black of Jonesboro, Ga., and Brad J. Black of Ogden, Utah.; a sister, May Miles of
Grace, Idaho; nine grandchildren; several step- grandchildren; several great-grandchildren
and greatgreat-grandchildren. Verna was preceded in death by her two husbands, her
parents, four brothers, two daughters, Norma Holliman and Margaret Countryman, one son,
Samuel M. Payne, and two grandsons.
Following her request, Verna was cremated under the care and direction Downard Funeral
Home, of Pocatello, Idaho. Graveside services will be in Bloomington, Idaho, Saturday,
November 28, 2009, at 1 p.m. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
