WASILLA, Alaska - Gerald Thomas (Tom) Wood, 90, passed away October 4, 2010, in
Wasilla, Alaska at his home. Tom was born to Daniel T. and Susan Walton Wood on May 8,
1920, in Auburn, Wyoming, and was raised on the family farm.
Tom met Virginia Dawn Solum in Georgetown, Idaho. They were married on October 30,
1940, in Paris, Idaho. They were sealed in the Logan, LDS Temple on September 25, 1961.
Tom and Ginnie had three sons, Lonnie, Rodney and Dean. After their marriage they moved
to Salt Lake City, Utah, for several months so Tom could work for a small arms plant. He
was then called to work for Anaconda Mining in Conda, Idaho. He then started a bulk fuel
plant in Georgetown, picking up fuel oil from the Salt Lake refineries daily, delivering
oil to Monsanto Chemical and area businesses.
In 1958, Tom's brother-inlaw, Donniel Jensen, joined him in starting Jensen Wood
Motor in Montpelier, Idaho, selling Chrysler, Dodge cars and trucks. They also sold Allis
Chalmers tractors and farm equipment.
At the time of Donniels' death in 1974, Tom sold his share of the partnership and
bought the Solum family ranch in Georgetown. He and a friend built a log home on the ranch
on Summit View Road. Tom put 10 months into their log home, built with logs that he and
his sons had cut down a couple years earlier. He worked on the farm in the summer and
occasionally sold farm equipment for his brother, Don, who had a John Deere dealership in
Tom always worked hard. He never stopped until a job was done, unless his family needed
him. His family always came first. He loved to camp with all of his family. He also loved
to climb mountains in search of the best elk. He loved to fish in San Carlos, Mexico,
where he and Ginnie spent 23 winters. After selling their home in Mexico, they bought a
home in St. George, Utah. For health reasons they moved to Alaska in 2009, to be closer to
their son, Lonnie.
Tom was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Tom is survived by his wife of 69 years, Virginia of Wasilla, Alaska; his three sons
and their wives, Lonnie (Cheryl) Wood of Wasilla, Alaska, Rodney (Patti) Wood of Soda
Springs, Idaho, and Dean (Teddy) Wood of Sandy, Utah; six grandchildren and 18
great-grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, Russell,
Percy, Jesse, Don, Denzil, Verl and Earl, and five sisters, Bertha Leavitt, Ada Hillyard,
Ila Wilkes, Lula Griffith, and Elgin Johnson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at noon in the Georgetown
LDS Chapel. Friends may call prior to services from 10 to 11:45 a.m. Interment will be in
the Georgetown Cemetery.
