Our sweet mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, died early the morning
of Nov. 19, 2001 at LDS Hospital at the age of 84 due to causes related to age. She was
born Aug. 24, 1917, at Paris, Idaho to Alfred John and Clara May Hess Bateman. She greatly
enjoyed her growing-up years in Logan. After graduating from Logan High School she worked
at the telephone company until her marriage to Morris John Jones on Nov. 3, 1938 in the
Logan LDS Temple. He preceded her in death July 24, 2000.
Othel was a loving, caring person, who taught her children by her example. Helping
others to her was like breathing, and she was always there where needed, baking or
preparing meals for families in the neighborhood when there was a death or an illness. She
found great fulfillment in creating a beautiful home filled with warmth and security for
her family, in tenderly caring for her beautiful flower gardens, in working diligently in
many LDS Church assignments, and in many close friendships and family ties with her
sisters and brothers. She always had time to really listen, empathize, and care deeply
about others' troubles and problems. However, her greatest fulfillment was found in
her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who are blessed to have basked in
her unconditional love and acceptance throughout their lives. She has always been their
greatest friend, so proud of their every accomplishment, and she will be greatly missed by
Othel is survived by her four children, Jay (Gayle) of Scottsdale, Arizona; Kathy
(Terry) Morris of Thayne, Wyoming; Eugene (Kathy) of Cupertino, California; and Gregory
(Marta) of Bountiful, Utah. She has 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is
also survived by her sister, Thelma Leatham Borg of Wellsville and was preceded in death
by one sister, Lucille Johnson Roundy, and six brothers, Alfred, Dr. George M., LeRoy, Dr.
Harold C., Rayo H. and Russell Bateman.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 26, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Orchard Seventh
Ward Chapel, 3599 So. Orchard Drive in Bountiful under the direction of Russon Brothers
Mortuary. Friends may call 9:45-10:45 at the church prior to the service. Interment at 3
p.m. in Samaria, Idaho.
The family wishes to send their deepest and most heartfelt thanks to the great
administrators and staff at The Salt Lake Home, who cared for their dear mother with love
and compassion and made her so comfortable during the last years of her life.
Family suggests donations to the American Heart Association or The Nature Conservancy
in lieu of flowers.
