MONTPELIER - Margaret Elizabeth Clark Esterholdt, 88, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at
the Skilled Nursing Facility in Montpelier, Idaho. She was born February 6, 1916, in
Richmond, Idaho, to Robert and Nellie Mae Traver Clark, and she had one brother, Kenneth
Clark. At the age of 8 Margaret's mother passed away from a ruptured appendix, and
Margaret went to live with an aunt in Aneta, South Dakota, who raised her. Margaret
graduated from college in 1938, and became a school teacher. She moved to the Pegram area
to teach school. There she met Grant Esterholdt. They were married on November 18, 1939,
in Bloomington, Idaho. They lived in Pegram, Idaho, where they had five children, Larry,
who later died in a car accident in 1964, Bob, Dennis, who died as an infant, Marcia and
After the children were older, Margaret returned to her teaching career in Montpelier. She
taught third grade there for many years, and many remember her as one of their favorite
She was a wonderful piano player and played for the church, Eastern Star and other
organizations. She loved to just sit and play the piano. She loved animals and always had
pets around her. In 1977, Margaret and Grant moved to Montpelier. She retired, and they
did some traveling to Alaska and Hawaii. They also loved to go camping and fishing.
Margaret is survived by three children, Bob Esterholdt of Buhl, Idaho, Marcia Singleton of
Montpelier, and Connie (Larry) Clever of Grand Junction, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Kenneth,
husband, Grant, and sons, Larry and Dennis.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 5, at 11 a.m. in the Matthews Mortuary Chapel,
where friends may visit with family that morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Burial
will be in the Montpelier Cemetery.
