MONTPELIER — Melba Sparks Johnson, 83, passed away Friday, August 11, 2006, at the Bear
Lake Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born March 18, 1923, in Dingle, Idaho. to Elliot
and Mona Nowland Sparks, the oldest of 11 children. She married Virgil Doniel Johnson on
August 4, 1940. Melba and Doniel built their home in Ovid where they lived until Doniel’s
death in 1991.
Melba worked as an LPN at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She was an
avid bowler. She also had a love for the outdoors, enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing.
She liked to grow flowers and was especially proud that she could grow roses in Ovid.
Melba liked to knit, most of her family members have at least one sweater she knitted
especially for them. She also made quilts for her grandchildren.
Melba is survived by her daughter, DeAnn Plowman, and two sons, Virgil (Cheryl) Johnson
and Paul (Marla) Johnson; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, JoAnn
Koeven, Georgia Lanham, Sandra Hartley, and Darla Lloyd; and 4 brothers, Eugene (Rusty),
Deon, Mardell, and Allen (Pudge) Sparks.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brotherm John (Jackie), and a
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 12 noon in the Bern LDS Ward
Chapel. Friends may visit with family at the church in Bern from 10 to 11:45 a.m. The
interment will be in the Ovid Cemetery.
