MONTPELIER — Merl John Roberts,, 72, passed away suddenly on Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, at the
Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier, Idaho. He was born Jan. 15, 1934. in Lanark,
Idaho, to John Thomas and Elsie Hymas Roberts, the second of seven children. He graduated
from Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho. He married his sweetheart, LaNette Nield, on
Oct. 8, 1954, in Montpelier, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple.
Merl has worked in many occupations, including produce manager for Haddock’s IGA and
Broulims. He also worked for Van Gas, Walton Feed, and Leonhardt Distributing. He was a
volunteer for the Montpelier Fire Department, Bear Lake County EMT Service, and the Bear
Lake Senior Citizens’ Center. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latterday Saints where he served in various callings, including Eldera’ Quorum Presidency,
High Priests’ Group Leadership, Executive Secretary, Assistant Stake Clerk, Ward Mission
Leader, Stake Missionary, and his favorite, being an officiator in the Logan Temple with
his wife for the last seven and one half years.
Merl loved spending time in the outdoors, which included, hunting, fishing, camping and
cutting firewood. But his greatest joy was his family whom he loved very much. He also
enjoyed serving others.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, LaNette, three children, Marsha (Robert) Ward,
Kelly (Karen) Roberts and Rick (RaNae) Roberts, 19 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren,
and three sisters, Verdene Wells, Marie Tucker and Donna (Terry) Carlson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Dale, Wilford and Alfred, and
two greatgrandsons, Jaren and Carter.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 31, at noon in the Montpelier Fifth Ward LDS
Chapel. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday evening at Matthews Mortuary from 7
until 9 p.m. and on Thursday at the church from 10 until 11:45 a.m. The interment will be
in the Montpelier Cemetery.
