LANARK - After a courageous 10-year battle with cancer, Arden Dee Smith Sr., 80, passed
away at home on September 26, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. Arden was born April
5, 1927, to Annie Laurie Anderson and George Nathan Smith. When he was 5 years old, his
father passed away. About two and a half years later, his mother married Urias Keller, and
the family moved to Mink Creek, Idaho.
Arden attended the Mink Creek School while growing up, and then at the ripe old age of
13, he set off on his own. Arden worked in California and Idaho until he enlisted in the
Navy in 1944.
He spent 18 months as a Navy SeaBee at the end of World War II. He was stationed in the
Philippine Islands and Guam during that time.
Arden returned home in April of 1946, and 12 days later he married his childhood
sweetheart and the love of his life, Reva Smith. They celebrated their 61st wedding
anniversary on April 16, 2007.
Arden was an extremely hard worker throughout his life, and always completed the jobs
he needed to do. He was a proud card-holding member of the Operating Engineers for 58
years. He was an outstanding master mechanic, welder and supervisor. He used these
talents, in addition to others, to make a living and support his family.
Although he had no formal education as an engineer, Arden could fix, build and improve
anything he laid his hands on. If you were ever in a bind, the one person you wanted there
He had a passion for antique cars. He restored three antique automobiles, which he
built from mere parts, and was working on the fourth when he died. Arden entered his cars
in various events and received numerous awards for them. When asked what his favorite car
was he replied, "One that runs."
Arden had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor that made everyone around him
smile and laugh.
Arden was preceded in death by his father, George L. Smith, mother, Annie Laurie
Anderson Smith Keller, stepfather, Urias Keller, one sister, Della Smith Keller, one
brother, Earl N. Smith, and numerous stepsisters and stepbrothers. He is survived by his
