LEO NEWTON COFFEY
Leo Newton Coffey, a resident of Lamoni Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Lamoni, IA
and formerly of Garden Grove, IA left this life Oct. 26, 1998, following a brief illness.
He lived a good life for 97 years.
He was born the son of Newton and Gertrude (Robinson) Coffey in Wayne o., on July 22,
1901. He was married to Elsie Walker on Jan. 6, 1925. They were married for 58 years.
Leo was a farmer, the manager of the Garden Grove Produce Station for 23 years and a
custodian at LeRoy school for 7 years, before officiall retiring at the age of 72. He
maintained his own home after the death of his wife in 1983 until 1995, when he made his
decision to enter a care center.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elsie; a daughter, Maxine Palmer,;
three brothers: Carl, Bill and Raymond; and two sisters, Opal and Mildred.
Surviving are two daughters, Irene McCarl and husban Clifford of Marion, IA and Imogene
Brown and husband Paul of Ohio; one son, Fred Coffey and wife, Carol of Houston, TX; one
son-in-law Robert Palmer of Garden Grove; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; five
great, great grandchildren and four sisters, Carol Dickert of New Mexico; Velma Anderson
and husband Burl of Texas; Erma Clare and husband, Ed of MASS. and Dorothy Smith of
Funeralservices were held at the Slade-O'Donell Funeral Home in Leon. Burial was in
the Garden Grove Cemetery.
