I am a descendant of Dries VAN OENE & Willemina (VAN DE STRAAT) who
settled in IA (from Holland) in 1884. 9 or 10 of their 13 children were
born in IA between FEB 1884 and DEC 1901. In 1903 they immigrated to
Glen Ewen, Sask, Canada.
Genealogy records indicate their birth place as Pella, Marion Co., IA.
The 1900 US Census shows their residence as Scott Twp, Poweshiek Co. As
well, I have WW1 Attestation Papers stating that 2 sons (Henry, b: 9 MAY
1892 and John, b: 20 AUG 1895) were born in Montezuma IA (in Poweshiek
Co.) vs Pella, Marion Co., IA.
My Grandfather (Garret VAN OENE) used to joke about being born in
Montezuma. And today I found his State of Iowa birth certificate
showing date of birth as 31 AUG 1901 and place as Scott Twp, Poweshiek
Co. (State File #79-01-322).
Please -- can anyone help? If possible, I hope to confirm birthdates
and place(s) for the other US born siblings, namely: James (Jim),
Andrew (Andy), William (Bill), Anna (Annie), Elizabeth (Lizzie),
Morhenais (Rene or Rein) and Harmon (born abt 1898, died from Diptheria
at age 12 but is in neither the 1900 US Census nor our 1906 Western
I'm new and would be very grateful for any suggestions. Seeing the IA
Birth Certificate convinced me not to give up, but I am at a complete
loss where to search next.
Thanks kindly, Lynn
