Searching for Anson Floyd McCreary b. 23 Feb 1884 in Iowa to Jones Laffayett MCCREARY and
Harriett W. KENWORTHY.
He married Bernice SWENDER b. 24 Mar 1889 in Carroll Iowa. They probably married between
1910 and 1912 in Iowa. They had a son by the name of John, nicknamed "Jack"
MCCREARY b. ca 1913 in Iowa.
In the 1920 census of Los Angeles, California, Bernice and her son John were living with
her mother, Caroline SWENDER at 7626 Hollywood Blvd in L.A.
In 1923, Bernice, her son "Jack" (living at 1515 1/2 Curson Ave, Hollywood, CA.)
and her mother (living at 1824 Curson Ave, Hollywood, CA.) were on the passenger list for
the SS President Taft, arriving in San Francisco, CA. from Manila, P.I. Undoubtedly
originating in Shanghai, China, as Anson Floyd MCCREARY must have been with the U.S.Naval
Attaché in Shanghai.
There is no record of them leaving the U.S. for Manila or Shanghai.
In 1925, Anson Floyd and Bernice MCCREARY were listed as passengers on the USS CHAUMONT (a
embarking Shanghai for Manila and arriving in San Francisco on 13 Jun 1923. Anson was
listed as employed by The Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. (this was during the
Boxer Rebellion, and at the time of high tensions between Japan and China prior to WWII)
In the 1930 census of Jacumba, San Diego County, CA. Anson F. MCCREARY is listed as 46,
divorced, retired U.S. Naval Officer and renting a home on Campo Buckman Road.
Anson's son John (or "Jack") appears to have become a Merchant Seaman as
both names appear on different ships as crew members between 1937 and 1946. Their ages
listed in the ships crew lists appear to match his approximate birth date, but I can't
prove this is his son.
I need some serious help finding out what happened to John (or "Jack") after the
divorce of Anson and Bernice, and I would also like to know what happened to Anson Floyd
MCCREARY after 1930. When and where he died and where is he buried.
John C. Hall, Petaluma, California
