My GGGrandfather and family disappeared from Preble Co OH in the mid 1850's.
Some family lore says they went to Iowa, but I haven't any proof. I read on
the Brethren Mail List that there was a large migration from western Ohio to
the Butler/Buchanan/Monroe Co area in the mid 1850s, so that's why I'm
looking there. These are the folks I'm trying to find:
Andrew SHAFFER (or perhaps SHEFFER) born about 1810 VA.
His wife, Sarah/Sally PENCE born about 1805 VA.
Their daughter, Mary Jane SHAFFER born abt 1830, OH married Daniel SHAFFER
1853 Preble Co. (I have seen Mary Jane in records as Jane and as Mary
also). I suspect Jane and her husband, who were probably cuz, traveled with
her parents, wherever they went. Daniel was born in IN, date unknown.
Dau Delila SHAFFER, born abt 1833, OH married William CASSELL1850 Preble.
William and Delila did not leave the Preble/Montgomery Co OH area.
Andrew was the son of Michael SHAFFER and Nancy MUNTZ. He had two younger
brothers Ira and Daniel Washington SHAFFER or SHEFFER.
Andrew and his father and brothers were in Preble Co OH before 1816, when
Michael married Catherine HUDLOW. So Andrew's mother, Nancy, probably died
in VA. Michael had farms in both Preble Co OH and Cass Co IN when he died
in 1867 in Preble Co. Several of the children from his second family were
purportedly born in Cass Co. Andrew was mentioned in Michael's will, so he
perhaps was still alive in 1867.
Other than the girls' marriages, the 1850 Preble Co OH census is the last
Andrew and Sally, I have been able to come up with.
Ring any bells?
