Is there a Baptist cemetery about six miles east of Pleasantville, Iowa?
If so, I would like to learn a little more about it, as I believe it was
the site of a Baptist church called Little Flock,
and some of the ministers who preached there were Elders John Harper,
D. S. Stevens, Bonham Kester, David Wortman, James B. Burch, J. M.
Arledge, George J. Jones, William M. Rose, J. S. Locke, and E. M.
Keeney. But I would like to obtain more history of the church, and if
possible its records or a photo of the building which is now gone.

I would like to find someone who attended the Rising Star School near
Knoxville or someone who has a picture of the school building/students
or someone who knows the history of the school. I have a book with
minutes of the board meetings that I am using for an article for our
next Marion County Genealogical Society Newsletter and would like some
history on the school and a picture or two for the article.

I would really appreciate some help from someone having access to the
The History of Marion Co., Iowa, Vol. 1 (Microfiche)
by Union Historical Company, Des Moines, IA, pub. 1881
In this book there is apparently a history of the establishment of the
county poorhouse. (I THINK it may be in chapter 6: Organization of county.)
I would like to be able to post it to my website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a
clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at
http://www.poorhousestory.com on the IOWA page at
If someone could scan it and send it to me via e-mail attachment, that would
be great! Otherwise, if you could photocopy it and send it to me via snail
mail ... I could scan it myself.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My Sherman ancestors came from Schuylkill County PA to
Marion County. According to family lore they arrived in IA
01 Jan. 1858 although the 1860 census indexes do not show
them in Marion County, but instead in various counties in
MO making it look like they were still in transit to IA.
Does anyone on the list have this book:
"German Settlers of Iowa, Their Descendants,
and European Ancestors, Revised Edition" by
Margaret King Palen. I'd like to know if it deals
with new immigrants from Germany direct to IA,
or if it also mentions families who'd been in PA
since colonial times.
