Greetings Cousin Nora Lee Steck!!!!
[Jacob Leonard Werts, younger brother of John Quincy Werts]
Read your notice via the above Wertz Relations newsletter, searching
for some living cousins from the John Jackson Werts
line. Perhaps helpful, will copy this to some who research this line as
I am Mary Beth Jensen, G G G Grandaughter of John Jackson Werts1831OH
& Esther Ann " Nellie" Wymer1837OH .
My mother, Mary Melvina Werts1911 was b in Russell, IA where your Eva
Esther Werts1891 IA & Bertrum Steck1888 removed
from to settle in Wyoming. Perhaps no coincident, also in the early
1900's, John Quincy Werts & son Orval Glenn Werts,
removed from Russell, IA to Wyoming. JQ was not satisfied with the
land and removed in 1913 to the rich lands of
Barron Co., Wisconsin to develop "The Moose Ear Ranch" on Hwy 8, east of
Canton, Sumner Twp.., Barron Co., WI.
His son, Orval Glenn Werts1882IA removed WY & joined JQ in Wisconsin,
each building a home on the lands, 800 acres.
Based upon a biography, it is likely that JQ went to Wyoming
after the death of his 1st wf, Melvina Davis1855IL in 1906, and
subsequent marriage to his 2nd wf , Mary C. McClelland1857PA, in
1907. I noticed in a bio from Barron Co., WI about his
son, OG states:
"In 1910 they [Orval & Eva Marie] moved by immigrant train to Powell,
[Park Co.,] Wyo., where they homesteaded 80 irrigated acres.
They operated a dairy farm there until 1913 when they moved Cameron
where they owned and operated a large dairy farm and sheep ranch for 54
[Actually, location of Moose Ear Ranch was on Hwy 8 near Canton, in
Sumner Twp., Barron Co., WI, ]
We have family photos entitled "Pioneer Home" in Sumner Twp., Barron
I assume the photos of the home was OG's, with his young bride Eva
Marie Curtis Werts1888IA and children.
[Since my Great Aunt Harriet Curtis was featured on a horse in one of
the photos, one might further assume the home is her sister Eva Marie
Curtis' Werts1888IA . ]
I noted that Eva Marie Curtis Werts & and Bertram Steck were both b. in
1888, so were contemporaries and likely knew each other if both removed
from Russell, IA
on the immigrant train to Powell, Park Co., Wyoming. Eva E. Werts
Steck, m. in Sep 1908 and Orval G. Werts, m. in Jun 1908, were first
Perhaps it was in 1910 or so when his cousin Eva Esther Werts and her
husband Bertrum Steck migrated westward as well ??
I have a delightful photo of your Maggie Robinson with sisters in law,
with their swim suits and shell picking bags .. in Florida. Are you are
able to download images ??
Or perhaps you have this image as it is said this particular set of
vacation photos was duplicated in the family who regularly vacationed in
Florida in the 1920's + .
Clifton1868IA& Clara McCoy Werts1869IA traveled there via his homemade
A major work in 1993 for this line was compiled by our cousin Philip
Allen of Las Vegas, NV with
important, detailed contributions by Rita Werts Coffman of Springfield,
MO and many others.
If you don't already have it, you may wish to order the Werts Family
History , publ. 1993

WEBSITES TO VISIT:
There are at least three significant GENEALOGY websites with John
Jackson Werts data and
possible connections to comtemporary cousins interested in your genealogical
searchers, may be found at one or more of the below websites. There are
that I am not recalling right now, but these are great:

Philip's son, Doug, as a gift to honor his Dad
and his genealogical efforts has developed a website that includes our
Denny Shirer's valuable website reflects the 1940's? work of F. C. Slater's
" Werts-Vinsel Family History & The Jacob Slater Family", his own
years of research as well as others, including the Shirer, Gaumer lines,
Verts, Vertz, Virts, Virtz, Werts, Wertz, and Wirts
Another super place to visit is Gary Virts comprehensive website.
Apparently many Wurtz descendants, Easterners, used the Wurtz surname
variation of Verts/Virts.
If you haven't explored his site, you may enjoy that as well. Gary has
some images and data that
illustrates relationships even tho' the surname is spelled so differently:
"...in census records, were there are brothers living side by side,
neither could read or write
and the last name is spelt differently in the same census record in the
I am pleased that Gary used my Grandpa Orval Glenn Werts' image on his
