Mrs. Alice Bates, 89, a former director of womens physical education at
University of Iowa, died Saturday night at an Iowa City nursing home after a
Private graveside services will be Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery, with the
Rev. Jack Zerwas, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Officiating. The
Donohue Mortuary is in charge of
Mrs. Bates was born in Chicago, Ill., Jan. 22. 1884, the daughter of Irving
and Katherine Curtain Wilkinson.
She married William H. Bates Aug. 19, 1914, at Chicago.
She came to Iowqa City in 1907, and served as physical examiner and director
of womens physical education at UI until she resigned as head of the
department in 1918. It was during that
period the UI Womens Gymnasium was built.
Surviving are three daughters, Katherine V. Bates of Bakersfield, Calif.,
Marion V. Bates of Iowa City, and Mrs. Richard Welch of Marshfield, Wis.;
and three grandchildren.
Her husband died in 1956, and a sister also died earlier.
