In the 1912 history of Iowa City by C.R. Aurne, there is this on page 341:
"St. Mary's Catholic church, corner of Linn and Jefferson
built 1844. Services before at house of Ferdinand Haberstroh,
uncle to Julius Haberstroh."
So the one in Iowa City did exist in 1851.

Subject: Iowa City Question
I understand there is or was a St Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City and
another nearby in Oxford Township.
Can anyone tell me if either of these churches existed in 1851? I
to locate where my Great Grandfather Patrick Mahan was married.
has it that he was married in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City.
