OBITUARY 30 Dec 1919 [Lori's note Joachim was changed to John after arrival in the
Aged Woman Passes Away - Mrs John Eckleberg, Sr., Dies Monday Morning at the Home of her
daughter, Mrs. Ricka Brandt, in this city.
Mrs John Eckelberg, Sr. the aged mother of Mrs Ricka Brandt and John Eckelberg, of this
city, passed away peacefully at the home of the former in this city, about 8:30
o'clock Monday morning. Mrs. Eckelberg, who was nearly 89 years old, had been rather
sick for two weeks, but her death was due to the infirmities of old age. Mrs Eckelberg
was born March 10, 1836 in Mecklenburg Schwerin, German, and was married in that country.
In 1870 the family came to America, coming first to Sabula, but going immediately to
Fairfield township where the father and sons took up farming. Here Mrs. Eckelberg lived
until the spring of 1916 when she came to Sabula with their son, John, and then began to
make her home with their daughter, Mrs. Brand. The husband passed away seven years ago
and she leaves to mourn her death three daughters and two sons, as follows: Mrs. Ricka
Brand, and John Eckelberg, of Sabula; Mrs Mary Paulson, of Onslow; Mrs. Sophia Fortner of
Belmond, and Fred Eckelberg !
of Fairfield township. There are also nineteen grand children and ten great
Mrs. Eckelberg was a member of the Lutheran church since childhood and was a consistent
follower of its teachings. She was a woman who faithfully Fulfilled the duties of wife
and mother and in her old home community was known as a kind and charitable neighbor. The
funeral services were held at Spragueville at 11 o'clock Wednesday Morning, the
Lutheran minister of the church there, Rev. Moehlmann, officiating.
