My husband's grandmother Lois Taft, who later married Alfred Henry Smith,
is listed in the 1910 census of Albion Twp. as a teacher. The entry is
difficult to read but I believe it says at the Cain School. Can someone
help me with information about this school or tell me if I have the name
right? I'm not familiar with the area so any help would be appreciated.
Dear List Members,
My husband's mother was from Howard County and I am looking for information
about her ancestors. Her Smith ancestors lived in Albion Twp. since about
1856. Her parents were Alfred Henry Smith and Lois Taft. This is some of
what I have on the Smith line:
Samuel Smith (b. VA; d. 1878 in Stephenson Co., IL when hit by a train) md. ?
George Henry Smith (b. 1828 VA; d. 1891 IA) md. Catherine Osborn (b. OH;
d. 1911 IA) in Freeport, IL in 1851
Samuel Smith (b. 1856 IL; d. 1930 IA) md. Lillian C. Howe (b. 1862
IA, d. 1937 IA)
Alfred Henry Smith (1887-1971 IA) md. Lois Taft (1885-1970 IA)
I would love to know more about these people, especially their spouses. I
know next to nothing about Catherine Osborn and Lillian C. Howe (Samuel
Smith's brother John married Elizabeth Howe and sister Maria married
Charles Howe. I do not know if all these Howes are related). Lois Taft's
father was Edgar James Taft and her mother's name is thought to be
Do any of you connect to these folks or know anything about any of them?
I'd love to hear from you.
