I am new to the board, but I have been perusing posts on many boards for the
past two weeks. My sister has done most of the family research; I am quite
new to it. So if you follow my history, there may be a question or two at
the end of it :)
My father's name is JOHN GAYLARD SMITH, b. 12 Sep 1923, IL; d. 31 Jan 2003,
Las Vegas NV, buried in the VA cemetery in Boulder City, NV. Married Rosaria
DeGrasse 27 Jun 1942; d. 12 Apr 2004; bur. Boulder City NV VA cemetery.
My grandfather is FREDERICK J. SMITH, b. ca. 1885, possibly 13 Sep 1885,
Nemaha Co. KS (One record I have says Henry Co. MO, but his first marriage
record says "Nehama" KS - probably a misspelling); d. 1952, possibly 23 Jul
(doesn't sound right - will verify), location unknown but believed to be
buried in Lambirth Cemetery, Henry Co, IA.
Married 1st 7 Apr 1907 to Mabel Brumbaugh, b.1886-1888, Ft. Madison IA; d.
1908; bur. Lambirth Cemetery, twin infant sons buried in same coffin.
Married 2nd in 1910 to Hazel Adelia Ames, b.5 Nov 1894, in Stuart, Holt Co.
NE; d. 26 Aug 1964, Calif.; bur. Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier CA. Hazel
also m. (1) William Harper; (2)Charley Armstrong; (3) Frederick Smith;
(4)Charles Burrell. Hazel's parents, Tyrus Porter Ames and Florence Miller,
are buried in the Smith/Beebe cemetery in Albia, Monroe Co., IA.
My great-grandfather is GEORGE SMITH, born in Rome, Tippecanoe Twp., Henry
Co. IA, date unknown. Married 19 Jun 1873 to Emma Elizabeth VanDoren, b.
1856, d. 17 Aug 1899.
My great-great-grandfather is "MR. SMITH," allegedly married to a Catharine
Beaber or Beeber. My only source for this information is from the 1879
biography/history of Henry County.
A couple of questions, hopefully someone can answer for me:
(1) WHO IS MR. SMITH??? :)
(2) There are plenty of Beabers in Henry Co. showing up in the censuses,
especially in Salem, but no Catharines or Catherines. Does anyone have a
Catharine Beaber in their research?
(3) The Henry Co. website list of marriages shows a SMITH, URIAL T. to
WALTERS, CATHARINE B., 10 Jul 1842. I am wondering if this could by my Mr.
Smith, and if Catharine's "B" could be for Beaber. If someone could check
into this record, I would be very grateful.
(4) If I could find Frederick Smith's place of birth and definitive location
of death, I would be in heaven. Burial place would send me over the edge!
(and make my uncle pretty happy too!)
(5) Frederick's first marriage was to Mabel Brumbaugh, but I can find no
record of her other than the marriage record. She is kind of a "footnote" to
our line, but I would like to know more about her. She has no headstone, but
is on record as being buried in Lambirth Cemetery, next to her mother, Susie
Caviness; her father was Brinton Brumbaugh, and the marriage record states
her birthplace as Ft. Madison, IA.
More information will be forthcoming as I receive it.
Thank you in advance; I'm sure I will have MANY more questions!!!
