I am looking for proof that Mary Ann Cass (1834 - 1904) is the daughter
of Stephen Cass, granddaughter of Elihu Cass and great granddaughter of
Josiah Cass. She was born in West Hawkesbury Twp., Prescott Co.,
Ontario. She was married to Alanson Bangs in Van Kleek Hill, West
Hawkesbury Twp., Prescott Co. 11 Feb. 1856. Her parents moved first to
Wisconsin about 1856. Her husband, children and she moved to Crawford
Co. and/or Vernon Co., Wisconsin about 1862. Her first husband died in
Vernon Co., Wisconsin, in 1865. Her second husband was John Denning.
He died in 1883. By this time she had 6 children: James John Benton
Bangs (1858 - 1927), Alonzo Bangs (1859 - 1928), Jerusha Bangs (Wilder)
(1860 - 1943), Joseph M Denning (born 1867), Mary M Denning (1868 -
1953) and John William Denning (born 1870). The Bangs children were all
born in West Hawkesbury Twp. The Denning children were all born in
Wisconsin, probably Utica Town, Crawford Co.
Mary Ann and husbands were storekeepers in Rising Sun, Utica Town,
Crawford Co., Wisconsin, which is very close to the border with Vermin
Co. She also published a weekly broad sheet in Rising Sun. Her eldest
daughter, Jerusha, married Josiah Wilder, son of the Rising Sun hotel
keepers. When Jerusha and family moved to Emmett Co., Iowa, she moved
as well, setting up a store with her bachelor son, Alonzo Bangs, in
Estherville, Emmet Co., Iowa. Shortly after Jerusha and family moved to
the Yorkton, Saskatchewan area in 1899, she also moved to Canada, buying
their first farm close to Yorkton, while they homesteaded to the
southwest. Mary Ann Denning and her son, Alonzo Bangs, are in the 1901
census of Saskatchewan. By 1904, Mary Ann and Alonzo had moved back to
Estherville, Emmet Co., Iowa, where she died 26 Aug 1904. Mary Ann's
brother, Stephen F. Cass, was a wealthy and prominent citizen of Sumner,
Bremer Co., Iowa.
So I know alot about her but proving her parentage has proven to be
quite difficult. I need a record which identifies her as the sister of
one of the proven children of Stephen Cass or as the daughter of Stephen
Cass and Jerusha Abbe/Abbey. The old genealogies of the Bangs and Cass
families which state that she is is apparently not good enough. The
Bangs family history was published during her lifetime but not a good
enough source any more. I have not been able to find her baptismal
record. Her marriage registration does not name her parents. She was
not home on census day in 1851 and married to Mr. Bangs by the time of
the 1861 census. I have not found a probate or estate file for her
father, Stephen Cass. I have not found her second marriage
registration. She is not mentioned in the biographies or obituaries of
her brother, Stephen F Cass. There are no family obituaries in the Van
Kleek Hill newspapers where they were all born and still had close
relatives at the turn of the century. Her death registration is also
hiding, although there should have been one in Iowa in 1904.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
