My great grandma was Lucy Pearl Schuneman who married Benjamin Franklin Fliss. Pearl is
the daughter of Henry Schuneman, son of William Henry and the Unknown Taylor woman. From
what I hear, After William Henry died in the fire, Clara had the older boys live with an
uncle in Spirit Lake. I know there was a John Schuneman in the area, so I'm assuming,
that is who they lived with. I've been trying to track the SChuneman's back
farther through John, but I can't pinpoint them. There are tons of them in NY in the
CAtskill Mtns. but none by the names I need. I think that William Henry is the
Americanized name of Wilhelm. There are a lot of Wilhelm Schunemans in NY, but I
can't find one for the time frame of William Henry.
On the Fliss side, William Fliss, Benjamin's father came over from Germany and on the
register in NY, his name is Wilhelm, but all the American records state his name as
William. That is one of the reasons I'm leaning on Wilhelm for William Henry. But
the cemetery you mentioned has William W. Now that extra W confuses me!! Maybe that will
help narrow down the Wilhelms!
Thanks so much for the info!!
P.S. Going thru my files, I have Clara's death record and it says she was born in
Wisconsin and her father & mother was born in England.
The news article mentioning William Henry's mother was dated 1-29-1886
It talks about Mrs. Henry Schuneman's life.... Mr. Schuneman decided to come to Spirit
Lake because a brother of his resided there at the time. He brought his aged mother. Mr.
Schuneman died after 2-3 weeks of excrutiating pain from burns and his mother's face
was badly burned, but she had no lasting effects. I haven't been able to find out the
