Martin Thorson was my great grandfather. My grandfather was Carl Thorson, one of
Martin's sons. You named other siblings, some of whom I remember including Evelyn,
Carl lived and farmed in Minnesota (Manfred Township) virtually all his life, except for
a brief period when he homesteaded in Canada in the early 1900's. Most of his life was
in Western Minnesota, but my dad was born in Mapl Plain, MN (just west of Mpls). Albert
lived in the MPLS and he was on the first college basketball teams at Augsburg College and
Mankato in Minnesota. However, I do not know if he graduated. Evelyn lived in Minneapolis
and was a seamstress. She lived with a sister, I am not sure which, but the sister had
been in the army as a nurse, I believe. I think the sister was Ida, but I am not sure of
Evelyn and Ida(?) never married, nor did Albert or Edward (I think) but many lived long
lives. One of the few stories I can recall hearing about Martin was told by Evelyn (she
lived independently in an apartment in South Minneapolis until she was 92). She told of a
family gathering in which many of Martin's children sat in the house while he shoveled
snow off the roof, and he was nearly 90 years old. Carl and his wife had 4 sons, one of
whom was my father.
I do not know the exact Milford, Iowa connection, but while going to college in Iowa, I
recall finding a cemetary at a rural Lutheran church with a Thorson relative.
I believe other children of Martin Thorson ended up in Washington State and Wisconsin and
raised families there.
Hope that helps!!
