SERVICES FOR MRS. RUTE HELD THURSDAY FROM U.M. CHURCH
Services were conducted Thursday from Union Memorial church in Milford for Mrs. Laura
Cother Rute, 86, a resident of Milford for many years, who died Sunday, July 8, in Spirit
Lake following several months of illness. Rev. Ivan Maxon of Calvary Methodist church,
Arnolds Park, officiated at the services and interment was made in Lakeview Cemetery,
Laura Cother Rute, the last survivor of five sons and five daughters of Wallace and
Elizabeth Stichler Byerly, was born in Jones County, Iowa, October 2, 1870 and passed away
at the Edwards Nursing Home in Spirit Lake July 8, 1956 at the age of 85 years, 9 months
and 6 days. She, with her twin sister, Lora was the youngest of the girls and next to the
youngest of the children of the family.
At the age of 12 she came with her parents to Dickinson County, living on a farm near
Spirit Lake. She completed her education in the school located just north of the present
Jersey Del farm. In 1886 she was married to James L. Cother. To this union seven
children were born, three of whom preceded the mother in death.
The family moved to a farm near Milford in 1911 where they resided until 1917 when they
moved into a new home which they had built in town. During this year a daughter, Mabel,
Mrs. Ed Borchard, passed away leaving four small children. One of theses little
granddaughters, Lois, only 20 months old was taken into the heart and home and reared as
one of the family.
As a young woman Laura was baptized into the Methodist church at Spirit Lake. Upon moving
to Milford her membership was transferred to what is now the Union Memorial Church there.
She remained a true and devoted member until her passing and so long as health permitted
gave freely of her time and energy to the building of Christ Kingdom.
Mr. Cother passed away November 11, 1936. She continued her residence in Milford and on
December 28, 1938 she was united in marriage to Thomas E. Rute. After nearly 15 years
this home was also broken by the death of Mr. Rute on December 5, 1953. In 1954, because
of failing health, Mrs. Rute moved to an apartment in Spirit Lake to be near her daughter,
Myrtle, Mrs. Charles Speer. By July of the same year she was no longer able to maintain
her own home, and she became a member of the Speer household. After many months of loving
care, it became necessary to move her on February 5, 1956, across the street to the
Edwards Nursing Home.
Mrs. Rute was a kind and loving mother and a very helpful friend and neighbor often
forgetting her own difficulties to lend a helping hand, and practicing in her own life,
the Christian example of service.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Myrtle, Mrs. Charles Speer of Spirit Lake;
three sons Ural C. of Downey, California, James Ernest and Clinton Edward, both of
Whittier, California; eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great
grandchild. Many friends, both young and old, will miss her thoughtful presence.
