A while back someone asked about Pleasant Anderson. Here is an incomplete
(the newspaper is torn) article from the Blakesburg (Wapello, IA) Excelsior,
Thursday, Jan 8, 1925, page 1. Microfilm from State Historical Society of
"Here is an item that was taken from last week's Bloomfield Democrat "forty
years ago column:" "Ples. Anderson was lynched by a mob near Blakesburg.
He had been accused of the murder of Chris McAlister, robbery being the
alleged motive. Anderson had been tried and acquitted of the charge. About
fifty men and boys took him to the Prairie school house, held a lynch court,
and finally hanged him. Anderson protested until the last that he was
innocent. Among his last words were the following: "If there ever was a
breath of ....I am not the man ...McAlister, and I do not....a "
....indicates missing words because of torn paper.
