I am starting to look for my Great Great grandfather Thos Morris in the Troy area Davis County County. When I was there in 2000 I looked for an obiturary for him and his wife Mary Crabb Bell Morris but found nothing. I did find Mary's Probate Papers in Van Buren County. I did not look for Thos Morris Probate Papers nor a death certificate.
If someone could tell me what kinds of records I could likely find I would be most appreciative. Even telling me what would not exist would be helpful.

Hi. I think I perused "The History of Davis Co., IA" a few years ago. If it's the same book, it was published in 1881 and it didn't have an index. It took a handful of hours, but I scanned through it quickly looking for the surnames I was interested in (Heidlebaugh, Carter, Poling, Lasley). Besides county history and some biographical info, it listed Civil War veterans and their units.
I was a student at Iowa State at the time, and the university library had county history-type books from around the US, not just Iowa. If you're near a large library like that, you might see if it's available. Otherwise, I think the public library in Bloomfield (the county seat) has a copy.
