In regards to your Appanoose County Iowa Genforum post of September 8,
If you can help me clarify (or further confuse myself!) some of the
I believe Alvarine Marshall Dukes to be son of Robert Dukes & Nancy
Goodwin, born 1819 Monroe county Indiana married Mary Hill August 15,
1841 Putnam county Indiana. I have Mary as daughter of Thomas Hill &
Sara Wright. I have no other information on Mary. I have a Jesse Monroe
Dukes as 1 of their 6 children born 1845 Indiana and married to Mary
Ellen Moss and had at least one child Albert born 1879 Centerville.
Robert’s 4th and last known wife was a Nancy Davis. Robert is “said to
have had a large family and moved to Iowa advanced in age” Robert born
around 1798 possibly Kentucky.
Eliza Ann Dukes beleved to be daughter of Robert Dukes married Zebedee
Wright February 28, 1841 Putnam county Indiana. Zebedee born in North
Carolina 1819 moved to Indiana 1822, Iowa 1856. I can’t locate the
source, but I have Zeb as son of Benjamin and Mary Wright?
Believed children of Alvarine M. and Mary,
W.R. Dukes born 1843 Indiana (could this be the William R. of Company F
died Springfield MO ????)
Jesse Monroe born 1845 Indiana
Henry S. born 1847 Indiana
Harrison C. born 1849 Indiana
Joseph E. born 1852 Iowa?
Mary 1855 Iowa
Rebecca Dukes (dau. of Robert) June 24,1820 Monroe county Indiana, died
July 18, 1896 Kansas. married Ichabod Stewart March 4, 1840 Putnam
county, Indiana, Ichabod Stewart died June 17,1871 near Centerville.
Sarah Ann Dukes (dau. of Robert) 1828 Putnam county Indiana married
James Wyatt 1846 Putnam county Indiana died 1900 Appanoose county Iowa.
Lydia Martha Dukes (dau. of Robert) 1835 Putnam county Indiana married
John Parker 1855 Appanoose county.
Asrah (Azra) Dukes (Robert’s brother Ephraim’s grandson) born 1845
Fulton county Indiana found in Van Buren county 1867.
And the one I am most desperately seeking info on
William Edward Dukes (my line and Asrah’s cousin) married Mary J.
Robinson January 24, 1867 Van Buren county Iowa. According to William’s
pension papers Mary died January, 1869. Trying to find any children by
this union. (daughter?)
Any and all Dukes information is greatly appreciated. And feel free to
set me straight on the Wright, Hill, Moss info.
My family lived in Salt Creek and Lick Creek between 1856 and 1911. Great
Grandpa Jesse Goudy moved to Colorado then. Ggrandpa Wiiliam Snell left Iowa
before 1900. Goudy, Foster and Snell are the main lines. I'm also trying to
track Sarah Ann Snell. Her maiden name is reported some places as Myers, in
others as Forster (various spellings).
Welcome...I'm more on the "looking for" end, but love the mailing list.
There have been some great stories come thru here .... no relatives, but
great stories !
My "looking" for list includes a George Hardman in 1860 . His son Albert
was born to a Jane Calvert. We have not found George, a marriage record for
George and Jane, and Albert is not mentioned on the census although he
should have been several months old. Jane is still listed as living with
her parents. The only George Hardman we have found is clear up in Cedar
county. Any hints or help will be appreciated.
I have alot of Family from Davis County. Stufflebeam, Swaim, Johnson, Bain, Arnold, & more. Have headstone from Taylor Cemetery. Have graves at Stufflebeam Cemetery. Most of them were from around Bunch, Iowa and some came from Dean, Iowa
I agree with you 100% on that music. :) It is bad enough with the birds

Good Morning Deb,
WELCOME ABOARD. I'm sure you will be a big asset to Davis County. Do we need
to repost all our queries, as I notice none of mine were there? I have lots
of family who came from Davis County and am still trying to find some of
Maybe someone can answer me a question. I found several members of my family
lived in Stiles but went over the Missouri boarder to Memphis, Scotland to
get married. Was there a particular reason for this?
My family is the Isaac K. LAWRENCE family and Nicholas FOX family. My great
grandfather William LAWRENCE married Margaret FOX around 1893-1895, as my
Grandmother Hattie Iceline LAWRENCE was also born in 1895 in Stiles but no
records can be found. It's possible they didn't record it for some reason.
Her brother Linnel (1894) and sister Willy Fern (1899). And the infamous
question, "what happened to William LAWRENCE ??" It seems to be a big mystery
as how he got to Arkansas, IF in fact he did go there and die there in 1899.
Willy was only one month old at the time. It has boggled my mind for many
years now. Any one have some ideas?
Thank you for your time and again Deb, " WELCOME ABOARD ".
Good News! I have been selected to host the Rootsweb Davis County Sight. I have replaced Yvonne as Administrator, and now we can re-create what Davis County is made of. Please feel free to visit the sight, and we need volunteers to post info to the Obits, Documents, Bios & Queries. Coming soon will be a Cemetery Headstone Photo page. Please, once again, find time to volunteer some info towards this sight.
Does anyone on this list know anything about the Allens that lived out around
Drakesville in the late 1800's through the 1950's?
They are in the 1880 census
William Allen 62 b, OH
