MEDIAPOLIS - Gary Klenk, 33, Burlington Rt. 2, suffered a fatal rifle wound
Thursday in what authorities say was an accident.
Klenk's body was found alongside a fence on the Arthur Centner farm, off
Hwy. 99 four miles south of Oakville. He died instantly at shortly after 2
p.m. when his .22 rifle accidentally discharged, officers reported. They
speculate that brush or heavy weeds may have tripped the trigger as Klenk
started to climb the fence.
He was a dragline operator working atop a ditch on the farm and, officers
believe, during a lull in work, climbed down into a ditch and was getting ready
to climb the fence to shoot an animal at that point when the gun discharged.
He was born Oct. 5, 1946, in Des Moines county, the son of Russell and
Floreine Cover Klenk. He graduated from Mediapolis high school and married
Cindy Luttenegger Feb. 16, 1968, on the farm on which they had been living.
Surviving: The parents, Burlington Rt. 2; the wife; three sons, Jeffrey,
Jeremy, and James, all at home; two brothers, Kenneth Klenk, Oakville rural,
and Richard Klenk, Burlington Rt. 2; and sister Janice Brown, New London.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday, Fry Chapel, Mediapolis, Rev. Edward Davis and Rev.
Vernon Spinner; Memorial park cemetery.
