St. Ansgar IA Enterprise - September 28, 1927
The marriage of Miss Esther Hartwig and Mr. Joseph C. Groth was solemnized
at the Rock Creek Lutheran church on Sunday, September 25, 1927. The ceremony
was performed at 3 o'clock by the Rev. J. Gemaehlich in the presence of a
large company of relatives and friends.
Miss Selma Houg, cousin of the groom, played the wedding march. Mr.
William A. Groth sang two solos: "Oh, Promise Me" and "At Dawning".
The bride was beautiful in a gown of orchid transparent velvet, wearing a
veil of white tulle held in place with orange blossoms. She carried a shower
bouquet of white roses. Miss Alice Groth, the groom's cousin, acted as maid
of honor and was attired in blue georgette and carried a corsage bouquet of
pink and white roses. the groom wore a dark blue suit and was attended by
Paul Hartwig, brother of the bride.
Immediately following the ceremony, a three course dinner was served at the
parental C. H. Hartwig home to about 45 of the immediate relatives. Four
intimate friends of the bride: Esther Priem, Esma Rosel, Savera Rosel and Edna
Dieterichs, acted as table waitresses. Orchid and white predominated in the
decorations of the tables and the rooms. The brides table was beautiful with
a large wedding cake, baked and decorated by Jay Brooks.
The remainder of the afternoon and evening was spent in visiting.
Interspersed with a program of music and social diversions. After a midnight
lunch, the guests departed leaving many beautiful and useful gifts for the
bride and groom.
The happy couple departed Monday for an extended honeymoon thru the south,
expecting to visit the Ozarks and other points of interest.
Joe is one of our most popular young men and for a number of years, has
been one of our leading business men. He & his brother, William, own and
conduct the St. Ansgar Bakery and Groth Brothers Grocery.
Mrs. Groth is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C. H. Hartwig of the community
southwest of St. Ansgar and has been one of the most enterprising young ladies
of the neighborhood, taking a very prominent part in the Farm Bureau work of
Newberg township.
