Of Heart Attack
(photo - a more recent one)
Frank C. Welch
__Cedar Rapids News -
__Frank C. Welch, chairman of the board of the Peoples Bank and Trust Co., died
of a heart attack in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Thursday. He was 77.
__Mr. Welch, who devoted 62 years of his life to the banking business, all of
it at Peoples bank, was vacationing in Florida when he was stricken.
__Mrs. Welch and a daughter, Mrs. James Meek of Cedar Rapids, were with him in
the Welch apartment in Ft. Lauderdale when the attack came at about 10 p.m. He
was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
__Started in 1905.
__Mr. Welch went to work for Peoples Bank and Trust Co., as a messenger boy on
July 7, 1905, and in the best tradition of American business became chairman of
the board.
__His 62 years on the job stands as one of the longest service records in Iowa
banking circles.
__Mr. Welch advanced through all of the departments in the bank after he was
hired and in 1913 he became cashier. He was elected president in 1933,
succeeding the late John Burianek, the man who hired him.
__He became chairman of the board eight years ago and his son, Ted, became
president. He had been a member of the board since 1914.
__Mr. Welch and Burianek established an installment loan department at the bank
in 1928. Although this personal loan service for individuals is common place
today, it was a marked departure from standard policy at that time.
__One of his proudest achievements was that in 62 years of banking, his bank
never closed its doors. The most satisfying part of his job, he once said, "is
the knowledge that people you have loaned money to over the years have gotten
ahead."
__He was a graduate of old Washington high school.
__Born in Illinois
__Born in Savanna, Ill., May 19, 1889, he was married June 11, 1919, to Edith
Schroeder of Richmond, Ill. He served in World war I as an ensign in the navy.
__Mr. Welch was a past president of the Iowa State Bankers Assn., the Cedar
Rapids Clearing House Assn. and was a member of the American Bankers Assn. for
which he served on several committees.
__He was also a member of the Cedar Rapids Country club, the Linn county draft
board from 1942-55, the Community Fund committee, Chamber of Commerce, Amercian
Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Navy League Council, Knights of Columbus, of
which he was a past grand knight, Elks, Pickwick club and the Horsebuyers club.
__Survivors
__Surviving in addition to Mrs. Welch are the daughter, Mrs. James Meek, and
the son, Ted, both of Cedar Rapids; a brother, John M. Welch of Cedar Rapids; a
sister, Sister Mary deLillis of Mercy hospital, and seven grandchildren.
__Services are pending at the Monahan-Stewart funeral home.
__The family home is at 2300 First avenue NW.
