1920 census.

Dies, Long Illness
__Dr. Frank J. Naibert, 3602 First avenue NE, a lifelong resident of Cedar
Rapids and a chiropractor for 32 years before his retirement in 1952, died in a
local nursing home Sunday following a long illness.
__He was born April 15, 1893, in Cedar Rapids. He was a veteran of World war I.
__Surviving are his wife, Lillian, and a son, Dr. Zane Naibert of Courtland,
N.Y.
__Dr. Naibert was a member of Westminister Presbyterian church, Crescent lodge
AF & AM and Trowel chapter RAM. He was the organizer of the VFW post in Cedar
Rapids.
__Memorial services: Turner chapel at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Allen S.
Van Cleve and Crescent lodge. Graveside services will be conducted by the VFW.
Friends may call at the chapel.
__All Master Masons are asked to meet with Crescent lodge at the Masonic hall
at 1 p.m. Wednesday to attend the service.

__Anna Naibert, 91, of 723 Eighteenth st. SE, widow of Joseph Naibert and a
Cedar Rapids resident 76 years, died Thursday. Born in Czechoslovakia, she was
a member of St. Paul's Methodist church and Cedar chapter No. 184 of OES.
__Surviving are a son Frank, a daughter, Mrs. James A. Largent, both of Cedar
Rapids; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Frank Jiruska
of Cedar Rapids, and 2 brothers, William Vick of Des Moines, and Joseph, of
Waterloo. Her husband to whom she was married in Cedar Rapids Sept. 25, 1892,
died in March of 1943 (sic.).
__Services: Barta-Hesser chapel Saturday at 1:30 by Dr. H. Hughes Dill. Burial:
Czech National. Friends may call at the chapel Friday after 4 p.m.

__Joseph Naibert, 69, a resident of Cedar Rapids for 55 years, died at 1 a.m.
today (Friday) at his home, 820 15th-st. SE, following a long illness. He had
been in the bakery business for 36 years prior to the sale of the plant at 308
6th - ave. SE to Petersen Baking Co.
__Mr. Naibert was born in Bohemia Feb. 8, 1871, coming to this city when a
small boy. He was a member of St. Paul's M. E. church, Crescent lodge No. 25,
A. F. & A. M., the Butchers & Grocers' association, and was an honorary member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
__He is survived by his widow, Anna; two sons, Dr. Frank J. of this city and
Eugene E. of Dearborn, Mich., and a daughter, Mrs. J. A. Largent of Cedar
Rapids. He also leaves a brother, Frank and a sister, Mrs. C. C. Swab, both of
this city.
__Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p. m. in the Barta chapel. Re.
Charles J. Bready, pastor of St. Paul's church, will officiate. Friends may
call at the Barta chapel Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Dies; Rites Saturday
__Cedar Rapids News -
__Harry S. Johnson, 60, superior court judge in Cedar Rapids and a long-time
figure in minor league baseball, died Thursday at 1:45 a.m. at University
hospital in Iowa City.
__He underwent surgery there Tuesday for a brain tumor. His son Larry, said
Thursday that hospital authorities reported Judge Johnson's death, following
the operation, was unexpected.
__He had been in poor health for the last year and a half although he continued
his duties as judge until two weeks ago.
__He is survived by his wife, Florence, the son, Larry, and an aunt, Mrs. Ada
Beau (sic - Bean?), of Clear Lake.
__Services Saturday.
__Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Turner chapel
by the Rev. Marvin B. Kober. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial cemetery.
__He first became judge in 1940, when he was appointed by Gov. George A. Wilson
to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Superior Court Judge Thomas B.
Powell. He was then elected to the office for the next term and continued to
hold the position until his death.
__Before his appointment to the judgeship he served as assistant city attorney
from 1930-34 and from 1936-40. He was city attorney from 1934-36.
__He also served three terms as clerk of the district court from 1921-26.
__Born in Illinois.
__Judge Johnson was born in Compton, Ill., and he attended public schools at
Clear Lake. He received a law degree from Drake university in 1913. During
World war I he served overseas as a first lieutenant with the 126th field
artillery.
__He was always a baseball enthusiast. After graduation from high school at
Clear Lake he pitched semi-pro baseball and then played in the Three-I,
Nebraska State and the old Iowa State leagues.
__His playing career was halted in 1911 after he suffered an arm injury while
playing with the Jacksonville, Ill., club. The following year he umpired in the
Iowa-Minnesota league.
__He first came to Cedar Rapids [photo inserted with caption, "Judge Johnson"]
in 1914 to open a law practice and from that time was always actively
associated with the Cedar Rapids Baseball Association, either as a member of
the board of directors or as an executive officer.
__President of Raiders.
__The Cedar Rapids teams, both the Bunnies and the Raiders, had strong seasons
under Johnson.
__While he was serving as vice-president, the Bunnies won the Mississippi
Valley league pennant in 1922, '25 and '30. When the club was reactivated as
the Raiders in 1934, it won the Western league pennant in 1937 while Johnson
was president.
__His most successful term with the Raiders came from 1939-42 when the team was
in the Three-I league. In '39, '40 and '42 the team won the pennant and in '41
placed second in the league. It also won the Shaughnessy championship playoffs
in '40, '41 and '42.
__Judge Johnson was a member of the Masons, Iowa Consistory, El Kahir Shrine,
Odd Fellows, Chamber of Commerce, the Elks club, the Forty and Eight club and
the American Legion.
__He was commander of Hanford post No. 5 of the Legion in 1930. He was honored
by that organization last year for outstanding membership work. In 1949 he
signed up 331 new members, the largest number ever recruited for the post by
any individual.

DR. R. K. KEECH
__Dr. Roy Kneale Keech, a resident of Hallmar and a Cedar Rapids resident 58
years, died Wednesday. He retired from medical practice in 1967.
__Born Aug. 17, 1878, in Mt. Carroll, Ill., he was married to Bess May Caldwell
June 21, 1930, in Chicago. He was a veteran of World war I.
__Dr. Keech attended Iowa State college at Ames and was graduated from Rush
Medical college in 1901. He took graduate work at the University of Chicago
after which he entered Wabash Railroad Medical Employes school as medical
officer.
__He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1909 and opened a practice which was to span 58
years, with the exception of service with the army hospital corps during World
war I. Briefly, following the war, he served as district medical officer for
the Veterans administration.
__Dr. Keech was a member of Mt. Hermon Masonic lodge, Apollo Commandery KT,
Cedar Rapids Consistory, El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids Country club, BPOE,
Pickwick club, the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce and St. John's Episcopal
church.
__In addition, he was a life member of Hanford American Legion post, the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forty and Eight, Iowa Medicaly Assn., American
Medical Assn., Railway Surgeons Assn. and the Linn County Medical Society.
__His wife is his only immediate survivor.
__Services: Turner chapel east Friday at 3 p.m. by the Very Rev. D. A. Loferski
and Mt. Hermon lodge. Entombment: Chapel of Memories. Military services will be
conducted by Hanford post. Friends may call at the chapel. All Master Masons
are asked to meet at Turner east at 2:45 Friday to attend the service.

Here Dies Tuesday
Funeral For John Keech

__John H. Keech, (83), retired railroad man, and for the past (15) years a
resident of this city, died at his home, (1030) Fourth avenue, at (9) p.m.
Tuesday.
__Mr. Keech was born July 4, 1842 at West(c)hester, Pa. He moved to Mt.
Carroll, Ill. with his parents at the age of six years. When 18, he enlisted in
Company (I) Ninety-second Illinois Mounted Infantry.
__After the close of the war, he returned to Mt. Carroll where he taught school
for some years. On Oct. (28), 1877 he was married to Mari(e) Kneale.
__He (entered) the (service) of the (CM&SP) railroad in (1884), and was station
(agent) at Oxford Junction until 1910, when he retired and the home was
established in Cedar Rapids.
__Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Dr. R. K. Keech of this city.
__Funeral services will be held in Turner chapel at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Rev.
W. W. W. (Argow) of the Peoples church, of which Mr. Keech was a member, will
have charge. Mt. Hermon lodge will conduct the ritual. Burial will be in Mt.
Carroll, Ill., where the body will be taken early Friday.

Hero Married
Van Horne, Oct. 13. - Lieut Jay Darcy, the only Van Horne soldier decorated in
the war, was married to Miss Esther Kelley two weeks ago in New York City and
came here last week. They were married by the chaplain of Lieut. Darcy's unit.
The bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Garret Darcy of Van Horne, where he
spent most of his life. After his discharge they will live in Chicago. He
served with the M. T. C. overseas and received the Belgian war cross for signal
bravery under fire, he also has a silver citation star won during the second
battle of the Somme. Recognition came to him for driving a motor truck long
sleepless hours under fire and through the dangers of shell torn roads.

Local Man May Lose His
Sight; Hurt By Golf Ball
_After serving eighteen months on most of the battlefields of France without
injury, Harlan Amen of Cedar Rapids, will probably be permanently disabled as
the result of an injury received while playing golf, according to word received
here today. Amen is now in an Omaha hospital it is said where he went recently
when it became evident that eyesight in one eye was permanently destroyed and
that in the other affected through being struck in the eye by a golf ball, in a
game last fall. At the Omaha hospital the injured eyeball was removed and the
other eye is now being treated in an effort to retain its sight.

Mrs. Harlan Amen
Dead at age of 71
__Pauline Day Amen, widow of Harlan R. Amen, 2537 Vernon court SE, a lifelong
resident of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday following a brief illness. She was born
May 14, 1892 in Cedar Rapids.
__Surviving are two brothers, Burton H. Day of Cedar Rapids and John D. Day of
Pacific Palisades, Calif., and two sisters, Helen D. Rush and Dorothy Day, both
of Cedar Rapids.
__Mrs. Amen was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal church, St. Ann's Alter
Guild, Grace Walpole circle King's Daughters, and was teasurer of the Cedar
Rapids Garden club at the time of her death. She was also a member of the Cedar
Rapids Country club.
__Funeral arrangements will be made later. Friends may call at the Turner
chapel after 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial: Oak Hill cemetery.
__The family suggests that friends, may if they wish, make a contribution to
St. Michael's Memorial fund or the Hall Radiation center.
