You must be talking to the wrong people in Elkader. We have a quite
active genalogical society with resources in the city library. The library just
underwent a complete remodeling and was "under seige" for about a year.
But it is now a lovely facility with lots of room to work, etc. and has a
section of genealogical information.
The head librarian always seems more than helpful to me. I have also done
a lot of work in the court house visiting only on the days when they
aren't really busy with court, etc. They do appreciate your trying to time
your visits with their off days, but I know that that office is really busy.
However, I know it is not always possible for you to know what days they
have court if you are from a distance and aren't aware of this.
Unfortunately, I have also run into the same situation with the
there in that I have written and received no response. A relative of
tried to deal with them in person and found the same. My Taake family
early settlers there in Elkader and are also buried there i Clayton
My relative was told that the clerks were forbidden to provide any
to genealogists/family historians. My Great Grandfather, Andreas
Christian Taake and his brother Ernst, both immigrated from Wechte,
Westfalen, Germany, ran a milling business there in Elkader in the
until the creek ran dry. My grandparents lived in Monona and I knew
little towns well growing up. I shared with them that I have original
and my family's birth records back in Germany that would be of
them, but they still gave no response. It's really unfortunate
like that was passed by and will be lost to the town of Elkader.
