I just recently subscribed to this list and look forward to receiving mail
from those of you who are subscribed. I definitely need to learn more about
researching in Iowa. My interests in Clayton County surround the families
of my GG Grandparents, Michael and Ann (Sheridan) McDONALD, who were living
in McGregor, Clayton Co., Iowa before 1857, and until after 1873. The
members of this family continue to be quite elusive for me because my FHC
does not have much on Iowa in it beyond the federal censuses.
Can anyone tell me just what is available in the way of additional sources;
censuses, state or special, city directories for that time period, whether
or not there are any marriage or death indexes and the like. I do know what
church they were members of, and have located baptismal records for some of
the children, but short of a trip to Dubuque, I would like to continue my
research from here in So. Cal.
Names that I have in that area during that time period are:
FARRILL, William, Ann
McDONALD, Michael, Ann (Sheridan), ch: James, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary Ann,
Margaret, Rose A.
McDONALD, Patrick, Mary (Farrill), ch: John, Elizabeth, M.A. (female)
McDONALD, Mary, Ann
McDONALD, Thomas, Ellen, ch: Michael, Thomas, Margaret (all born in Ireland)
SHERIDAN, Phillip, Bridget, ch: Michael, Margaret, elder parent: Mike (all
born in Ireland)
That's it for now. Hope to hear from you.
