I am also newly checking on NICHOLS in Clayton Co. IA. (Sperry Twp.).
My ggg-grandparents were Edwin and Lucretia NICHOLS SILVER (b 1811 &
1821 in NY). I "think" her parents were Rufus (b. NH) and Philena ROOT
(b. VT) NICHOLS who moved from NY to Michigan before 1830 and then to
Clayton Co. IA by 1850. I find them all in the 1850 IA census and some
in the 1860 IA census along with Austin/Oten Nichols (s/o Rufus) and
Rachel NICHOLS CHILSON WELCH (d/o Rufus). [Census taker spelling was
terrible: Filena, Silvir, Nickol.] Edwin & Lucretia Silver, Austin &
Mandana Nichols, and Rufus & Philena Nichols moved to MN where Rufus
died in Minneapolis in 1870. Widow Rachel Nichols Chilson stayed in
Clayton Co. after marrying John WELCH. My gg-grandmother, Mariette
Helen SILVER eloped with George TINKHAM in 1860 and they lived in
Clayton Co. until 1873. Two of Mariette Silver's young brothers are
buried in Hillcrest Cem. in Volga, Clayton, IA. Mariette's sister,
Philena SILVER, married a STAHL.
Anyone related to any of these people? Willing to share descendants,
need more proof of ancestors. 8-)
Thanks, Lynn Dielman, San Diego.
I am searching for information about the parents of Emeline CHEW. She
was born in Pennsylvania on August 21, 1814, I believe. ... Emeline was married to John O.
NICHOLS in about 1838, and they moved to Clayton County, Iowa, and later to New Jersey,
