With the help of Linda Braund of Pittsburgh, Pa., I recently learned more about the family
of my great grandfather, Mark Sweeney, who lived most of his life in New Hampton. He was
born in Wilmore, Cambria County, Pennsylvania (not far from Johnstown). His parents were
Bernard Sweeney and Elizabeth Ann Young who were married in St. Bartholomew's Catholic
Church, Wilmore, on March 22, 1853. Bernard farmed near Dorgan's Bridge outside New
Hampton. Mark and his wife Mary (McGuill) are buried in St Joseph's Cemetery in New
Hampton as are Bernard and Elizabeth. I think Bernard brought his family to Chickasaw
County in the early 1870s, and was in Buchanan County from about 1864.
Elizabeth had a brother, John Young, baptized in 1820 at St Michael's Church, Loretto,
Pennsylvania by the famous "Apostle of the Alleghenies" Fr. Demetrius Augustine
Gallitzin. John Young and his wife, Mary A., are also buried in St Joseph's Cemetery,
New Hampton, near the Sweeney graves.
The parents of Elizabeth Ann Young Sweeney and John Young were James Young and Mary
Wilmore, who were married by Fr. Gallitzin in 1817. Their father was Godfrey Wilmore, who
came to Cambria County from Harford County, Maryland. I don't yet have their
