I thought some of my imformation might be helpful. According to geneology research
done by Sibly A. Lenfest, John Gove Lenfest was born 12/13/1821 and died a prisoner at a
Richmond Virginia prison camp. Libby? or Bell Island I'm not sure. His death
according to Sibly was Jan 31, 1864.
To elaborate more, posts on the Maine Civil War Discussion Forum, says that he was in
the 20th Maine with Chamberlain and fought in the battle of Gettysburg. He was captured
the following week while pursuing Lee's army south.
To make matters more confusing there is a John Lenfest listed as dying at
Andersonville too. There was also a John F. Lenfest in the 1st Wisconsin infantry. My
paper work also shows a Elbrigde G. Lenfest in the 16 Batt'n Louisiana Infantry who
was a confederate private.
Anyway John Gove Lenfest's father was Nicholas Lenfest who married Hannah Gove.
She was his first wife. She and her infant son are buried on the Hiram Evens farm in
Liberty, Me. The is a civil war marker there too, for John Gove Lenfest.
Nicholas Lenfest was the son of Peirre Lenfesty born(11/2/1742)in Guernsey Island and
died (3/17/1820) in Lewiston Maine. He married Lydia Harris 2/4/1775. Of their many
children, James, Peter and Nicholas all settled on a mountain in Liberty, Maine and built
farms. Only Nicholas did not stay. James's farm fell to ruin, only Peters is still
Hope this was helpful. Amy
