I am looking for a marriage record for Elizabeth Pearsall Leslie (widow of
John Leslie) and a Moore groom in Buchanan County IA. John Leslie died
August 23, 1868 in Buchanan County. He is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery at
Elizabeth Leslie and her children are listed in the 1870 census at
Independence, Buchanan County IA. Her children are Lillie (Lillabore)age 15,
Charles S.age 13, Frank A. age 8, and Lizzie (Elizabeth) age 6.
The 1880 census has her in Denver, Arapahoe County, CO as Eliza Moore age
40, with Frank Leslie age 18, Lizzie Johnston age 16, Charles Johnston age
27 and some boarders. Her son Charles is listed in Liberty township,
Buchanan County IA with a wife and child.
Elizabeth's father, Horace B. Pearsall died in March 1879 at Independence,
IA. His will leaves some cash to his daughters, Elizabeth P. Moore, Lucia
Augusta Leslie, and Adelia Bodwell as well as his son, Stephen. This will
was dated March 21, 1879. It was witnessed by John Moore and J.A.
Utterback. I found a John Moore in the 1880 census in Buchanan County,
IA. I did not find him in the 1870 census, nor do I find a J.A. Utterback
in either census.
The obituary of Lavina Walker Pearsall (widow of Horace B. Pearsall) shows
her survived by son Stephen, Mrs. Moore of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Leslie of
Holt County, Nebraska and Mrs. Bodwell of Lower Canada. Lavina died March
Lucia Augusta Pearsall Leslie was my great grandmother, married to Samuel
Leslie, brother of John Leslie, Elizabeth's first husband.
I am not sure if Elizabeth's second marriage took place in Iowa or in
Colorado. Whichever it was, it had to occur between the 1870 census and
the will of her father in 1879. I also do not know the death date of
I do have access to Ancestry and Heritage Quest, so have done the census
research. Any other information would be appreciated.
