I'm new to the list and have seldom done any research outside of the New
York City area so all help and suggestions would be most welcome.
Our grandmother had told us a little bit about her childhood in Iowa but
being youngsters our selves at the time we did not ask for details.
We've just confirmed that the David Barry & family in Independence in 1870
& 1880 is indeed our grandmother's family. From these two censuses we have:
Father: David Barry b. abt 1834 either Ireland or New York
Mother: Mary b. abt 1836 Ireland (nee Donovan)
Daughter: Mary b. abt 1861 New York
Daughter: Anna/Anne b. 1867 New York (Jan.20th) (grandmother)
Daughter: Catherine/Kate b. abt 1869 Iowa
Son: David b. abt 1871 Iowa
Son: Daniel b. abt 1875 Iowa
We knew our grandmother came back to New York City and was married in 1899
in NYC and we have found her brother David & sister Catherine in NYC in
1900 and an 1896 NYC marriage record for Catherine. What we don't know is
whether her mother& father & other siblings stayed in Iowa or returned to
NYC too. Also just when they returned is unknown. Her sister Mary's
occupation is given as teacher in 1880 and the father David was a stock
Are there directories for Indendence for the 1880 - 1896 time frame? I'm
not sure how to proceed at this point but do know checking the NYC records
for the Barry surname will be quite an undertaking so thought I'd start
with Independence. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
