In a message dated 98-05-24 19:09:56 EDT, you write:
Mike---I may have given this to you before but if not: a Jonathan Phillips
paid personal property tax School Dist #7 T6 R8 Crickett in South Muddy
Township in 1891. I only have listings for So. Muddy, No. Muddy, and part
of Wade. Jonathan did not own real estate. Only two were listed paying
real estate tax for that location: Alfred Girth and William Everett.
I can send you the Phillips listed in phone book. There are 3 that were
listed in 1981 Jasper co. platt book. I you want addresses. I don't
know if any are on the web or not. I can try to check. The only server
here is @psbnewton.com (anything else is a toll charge). Barb Martin
Have you ask the genealogy soc. Pat Huston at Newton Library to check old
platt listings to help locate area?
Thanks for your help--Yes I have been in tuch with Patty Houston she is very

Does anyone have HAYES / HAYS in their family tree from Iowa?
I tell ya, I got pictures, I got census........stuff like that but
having such a hard time with Frank HAYES b 6/8/1859. He married Mary E.
BURNS from Fairbank, Iowa (Buchanan CO). They had 3 children, Myrtle
Frances HAYES (my great gramma), Clifford HAYES, and Blanch HAYES.
Iowa Gen Society sent me some census records and it shows Franks dad as
being Drayton HAYES and his grampa as Cephas HAYES, Cephas born in NY.
Frank died of typhoid fever 10/27/1892. Is there anyone could possibly
look in a newspaper for his death notice? I would be ever so grateful.
I was born in Oelwein, IA but at age 2 moved to Cedar Rapids where I grew up. My only connections to Buchanan county are the marriages of my mother and aunt occurred there (GILLINGHAMS). I asked my mother (still living) if she had a copy of her marriage certificate, but she couldn't find it. I would like to have the information on where to send for a copy of her marriage certificate and what information do I need to provide to get it (assuming that I can get such a certificate on a living person). My mother is Maxine Mary GILLINGHAM m. Mar 15, 1938 in Hazelton, IA to Leo Mathew BASTEN.
My aunt, Arleeta Rose GILLINGHAM, m. Apr 21, 1933, Milton LEATON, probably in Independence, IA. If anyone has access to county marriage records, I would appreciate a look-up on this marriage to confirm the location.
One final stab in the dark item: my grandmother, Lulu May BENNETT, married my grandfather when she was 28 years of age. There is some speculation that she may have been married previously, but no one knows for sure. Can anyone search county marriage records for the period 1898-1908 for any marriage for Lulu May Bennett?

Carrie who married the Roy Housden is my great aunt. I would love to
communicate with others who are related to this family. I don't have
enough time to research the collateral families like I would like to
and the HOUSDEN surname has taken up much of my time.
Actually, I think the Housden family had more connections to Buchanan
County that just Carry Ploung. Roy's sisters Nellie and Edna Housden
were members of the Ladies Coronet Band and I have some announcements
that they were going to be playing somewhere in Buchanan County (can't
put my hands on it right now so I can't say exactly where or when). Edna
Housden became Edna Robinson in 1913 so the band had to be before then.
Jerilyn Here...........As soon as we get more subscribers, I will be
making posts from a newspaper that I have that was a bicentennial for
Buchanan County. It has quite a bit of information in it and it helped
me alot in my own genealogy search. I hope it can help all of you as
well. As of date, we only have about 10 subscribers but I know that
will rise as John is putting it in the Rootweb list.
I havent seen any post yet. I hope it is working ok.
Your new Buchanan County List Owner
Hello, I'll help start the list by posting my family. They lived in Buchan Co
IA for a short time after 1853. They settled in Adair Co IA in 1869. I
believe some of David Lilley's children married and stayed in Buchanan Co.
My brother, while living in Independence, Buchanan Co., in 1970's was given a
family history. The family history includes George, David and Sylvester. The
individual who gave it to him found it and didn't think it was her family. I
suspect they maybe part of Winner family of whom one of David Lilley's
daughters married. If you recognize this family, I have more info.
