I just signed onto your list after learning my 3G Gf was in Appanoose Co for the 1860
census. He has been my brick wall for quite a long time and now, perhaps, I will be able
to find his death date and cemetery where buried.
I have been reading the archives and learned many residents migrated from Jackson Co, OH
and Montgomery Co, OH.
Well, Stephen ROOT was b. 1777 Connecticut and moved to Meigs Co OH by 1819. (Meigs is
just east of Jackson Co. OH.) His daughter, my 2 G GM married and lived in Montgomery Co
OH all her life. So I find these coincidences very interesting.
What I know from 1860 census:
Iconium Post Office, Chariton Twp, Appanoose Co, IA
Stephen Root b 1777 CT --82 yrs old --shoemaker
Mary (wife) b. 1897 CT --63 yrs old
(youngest children still at home)
Henry b. abt 1836 OH --24 yrs old
Henrietta b. abt 1840 OH --20 yrs old
Next door an older son and family:
Stephen ROOT, Jr. b. 1830 OH --30 yrs old
Ann (Joantha PARSONS) b. abt 1834 --36 yrs old
Ella b. 1851 OH
Wm. b. 1856 OH
I believe Stephen ROOT, Sr. and family(s) moved after 1858 when he sold his land in Meigs
If anyone has any info about ANY ROOT's, would you please let me know. As I said, I
just learned today this latest news. Who would have thought he would move when he was 80
yrs old, especially in 1858! He must have been one hardy man.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
