John Russell is buried in Salem Cemetery Lot No. 30/19
with his wife, Margaret (Gookin) Russell; their infant son,
Alexander; his mother, Mary (Larrick) Russell; his father-in-law
and mother-in-law, Langdon and Mary (Marshall) Gookin; and
other family members.
"Jno. Russell was born in Noble Co., Ohio, June 10, 1832, and
departed this life at his home in Russell on July 14, 1909, aged
77 years, 6 months and 4 days. His death came as a release from
his intense suffering of the past days. For two years he had been
a sufferer but bore it with great patience. He resided in Ohio until
22 years of age, when he came with his parents to Lucas Co., Iowa,
where he has made his home since. His parents were among the
first settlers, the town of Russell being named after his father.
He was married in 1857 to Margaret Gookin, who survives him,
with a son and daughter, Albert E. Russell, of Chariton, and
Cornelia C. Russell, of Russell. A sister, Mrs La Follett, is also
living. His remains were interred in the Salem cemetery beside
those of his son, Alexander, who died in infancy. May the grace of
the infinite God keep from day to day his bereaved ones and
comfort them by his loving care. Funeral services were held at the
home Thursday, at 10 a.m., conducted by Rev. D.J. Shenton."
