It would help if you knew what year he enlisted. Most of the men from
Fayette County were rendezvoused at Dubuque in 1862; 12th, 21st, 27th, 38th,
were all heavily recruited from Fayette County. The 3rd, 9th, (1861) also,
but rendezvoused at other places, the 17th Iowa was organized at Keokuk in
I found only two instances of Hawley's in the rosters from these regiments.
Levi P. Hawley, from Jacksonville (probably Chickasaw County) 14th Iowa.
John Hawley, from Decorah, Winneshiek County, 38th Iowa.
Its possible he enlisted but was rejected or deserted or joined a regular
regiment, before he was mustered in.

I would appreciate a look up for William Hawley who was in the Civil War.
He was mustered into, Co. H.
17th Infantry, Iowa.
At the time they were living near Taylorsville, Fayette Co.
