Good morning all ...
I've found an incomplete listing at one of my favorite websites
) for a man who is the right age for my
g.grandfather, "Mike" Smith, but it doesn't give enough information to
actually identify him as the "right" Michael Smith. My g.grandfather's
place of birth has never been definitely established. Various sources have
said he was born in Ireland, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Family
records only show that he was born in 1832 and was in Iowa by 1853 (when he
married), and died in 1880. I think he MAY have been in the war, because
his wife had children regularly until 1860 and then no more until 1872 when
the babies started to arrive again. They lived in one of the counties near
the Mississippi River -- Louisa, Des Moines Co., Muscatine, etc.
My dad always said that he'd heard his great grandfather (Mike Smith) was a
"blue bellied Yankee" but on the other hand, he wasn't sure that it
his 2nd great grandfather who was known to have been in the Graybeard
Does anyone have a more complete record than the below? I'd like to know
where this man (below) was living at the time he enlisted. Can anyone
identify this particular Michael Smith? It seems likely ... but??
I no longer have access to the pension application records -- if it's "my"
Michael, his wife's name was Mariah.
Residence was not listed; 32 years old.
Enlisted on 10/3/1864 as a Private.
On 10/3/1864 he mustered into "B" Co. IA 16th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 7/19/1865 at Louisville, KY
born in Illinois
