I had two uncles in the 1st Iowa Cavalry - Tilghman Bereman and Thomas Bereman. Thomas
eventually became a major in that regiment.
You should read the official history of the 1st Iowa Cavalry in the "Iowa Roster and
Records" report on the 1st Iowa Cavalry if you have not done so yet.
Immediately after the war, George Armstrong Custer took a brigade of Cavalry down to
Texas, to help restore order and help with reconstruction. There is a book about that
called "Custer in Texas." You might want to get a copy of that. The reaction of
the 1st Iowa Cavalry to Custer was that they hated him. Note that your g g grandfather was
mustered out in Texas. In the official history of the 1st Iowa Cavalry, it expressed some
degree of satisfaction that Custer met his death at the Battle of Little Big Horn based on
his own rashness. (Which was not a common opinion in 1908 or 1910, when the reports were
