He's listed as a "line officer" in the 31st infantry in Vol 3 of the
registers published by the Iowa Adjutant General. Here are direct links to

others on the list will respond and help you.
Good luck in your search. Be sure to check the photos on the Library of
Congress site for his unit. You might get lucky and be able to pick him out
if there is a photo of his unit since he was an officer.

Dear Member, I am naive to researching military records-US Civil War. Not
even certain of correct questions to ask. Looking for family member of Jones
County, Iowa. Hannibal C Freeman B 5/13/1832 D 7/30/1917 Buried Olin
Cemetery, Olin, IA (my home town) His Birth Date may not be correct. I think
he may have have been in two different units, but not certain, both the 9th
Regiment & 31th Regiment, Iowa Infantry. His name not spelled correctly some
of the time.
Once I have his information will come back asking for Silas Drake Johnson of
Cedar County, Iowa another family member. He died at the Battle of
Champion's Hill, Hinds Co, Miss
