If you are interested in the 11th Iowa or units that fought with the 11th, you may be interested in a new book just published in the summer of 2011. The title is "An Iowa Soldier Writes Home: The Civil War Letters of Private Daniel J. Parvin." The book was edited by Parvins great-great-grandson. It gives vivid descriptions of some of the actions, especially Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg and the prelude to Atlanta during which Parvin was severely injured. Parvin makes references to friends and family back home in Iowa, especially the Muscatine area, as well as naming many persons in the 11th Iowa and other Iowa units. He delivers detailed accounts of the everyday life of a common foot soldier during the war. More information about the book can be found at Amazon or Carolina Academic Press.
For anyone living close to Muscatine, the original letters are on display there in what I've been told is an impressive Civil War exhibit using a holographic image of Parvin writing and reading the letters in camp. The exhibit will be at the Muscatine museum through Apr 2012.
