Hello Everyone, I really hope someone can help my nephew and me.
I sent the email below several times over several months back in 2009 to
. library.services(a)merthyr.gov.uk and received no answer at all.
To summarize the email below:
Alan George on his Merthyr Tydfil website said the Merthyr Library has
the parish records of birth, marriage and death (1836-1900) from St.
Illtyd's Church (see relevant portion of his email below).
My gg parents were married there in 1876 and their first child was born
in Dowlais a year later. I have the Civil Records for both the marriage
and the birth. I'd like to get the Church records for the marriage and
baptism of these people.
Now my nephew is going to be in Merthr Tydfil and visiting the St.
Illtyds Church next week. This will be his first time in the UK. He will
have copies of the Civil Records with him.
Anybody have any ideas on what he could do in person to get these parish
records.
Can we go to the RC Church St. Illtyd's for the records?
How does one contact the church?
Where is the Merthyr Library ?
What's their address?
Do they have these records as Alan says?
What are the hours they are open?
We are not UK citizens and are from elsewhere and have no clue on how to
do this in person.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much,
Mary

Hello,
I learned from Alan George on his Merthyr Tydfil website that you have
the parish records of birth, marriage and death (1836-1900) from St.
Illtyd's Church (see relevant portion of his email below).
My gg parents were married there in 1876 and their first child was born
in Dowlais a year later. I have the Civil Records for both the marriage
and the birth. I'd like to get the Church records for the marriage and
baptism of these people.
What is the procedure for doing this?
Thank you,
Mary Williams

« Reply #2 on Feb 6, 2009, 10:27pm » The Civil marriage certificate
can be obtained from KEW BUT the St Illtyds Church records are NOT
available from Kew or from the local registrar. The records are in the
Church itself and Merthyr Library has photocopies of the originals
1836-1900 and Merthyr Library could supply a photocopy......

Mary,
Slight technical point. The resource you mention is not Alan George's site
(that is something different) but the Old Merthyr Forum. I read your
original message and Alan's full reply there.
Some may disagree, but I believe there are few, if any, more knowledeable
about all aspects of Merthyr's history than Alan so if he writes something
then you can take that as gospel. But I will add just one caveat to that
since the reply is some 3 years old.
In that time, Merthyr Central Library, where these records would have been
held has undergone some redevelopment. It is quite possible that they
transfered these records to another archive such as The Glamorgan Record
Office at Cardiff. Indeed the library website does make reference to the
Record Office.
Before making a trip to Merthyr itself, I would suggest you telephone the
library. This is the full local number 01685 353480. Normal opening hours
(I could not find the precise info) are approx 9:15 to 5 and extended hours
on a Tuesday.
The libary itself is very easy to find - on the far end of High Street. The
church is not in Merthyr but in Dowlais - a short distance away. I doubt,
even if you went there, you could get personal access to the original
records. Certainly not if photocopies exist either at the libary or
elsewhere.
