Merthyr Tydfil is normally known by most people as Merthyr.
Merthyr is normally interpreted as a Welsh version of the word Martyr. There
are at least two other small places in Glamorgan called Merthyr Mawr (near
Bridgend, on the road to Candleston) and Merthyr Dyfan ( the parish which
covered most of modern Barry).

Is Merthyr a part of Merthyr Tydfil or is it a separate town? In
looking
at the 1881 census for a relative who was born in Merthyr Tydfil, I can
find a likely candidate but he gives his birthplace as Merthyr, Glamorgan.
He is living in Merthyr Tydfil. I have looked on maps and have searched
for Merthyr but can't find one in Glamorgan. Or perhaps it is just a
shortening of Merthyr Tydfil?
