Try the Valuation Office property surveys from the early 1910s. The surveys
were conducted by the VO in order to assess the relevant level of tax to be
apportioned to every property in the country. The maps and surveys generated
by the exercise are held at TNA, and are well worth investigating. If you
can't get to TNA yourself, I would urge you to consider hiring a researcher
to do conduct a search on your behalf. If the property was in existence
around 1910, it will have been surveyed. The bigger, more significant the
property, the greater the level of detail the surveys will contain. I've
consulted the records many times and always find it an interesting and
rewarding experience. Be warned, though: the records created by the VO can
be a bit of a bureaucratic nightmare to sort through - but don't let that
put you off. More information about the VO records can be found here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/valuation-office-
records.htm
Typically, a survey will detail the age of a property, the materials used in
its construction, its condition, the number and type of rooms, the head of
the household (and no-one else), the owner, who was responsible for the
maintenance and upkeep of the property, the amount of rent paid/charged, and
its value. On rare occasions you might find that the surveyor has provided
one or more sketches of the property to compliment his notes.
Regards
Ed

Many thanks for all the lively suggestions. I've covered most of these
bases. The house was a mansion built sometime late 18th early 19th century
(I think) and it was demolished with barely a murmur in about 1970. I've
done most of the history with much help from the last occupiers but, just to
fill a gap, want to try and obtain some evidence of the date of the building
(if that is possible). I'll write to CADW. Who knows they might help or be
able to point me in the right direction.
Many thanks.
Martyn
