If the photo is in the carte-de-visite format (which it sounds like it is) there are all
sorts of clues to the timing of the photo in the photo itself, from what I can remember of
doing similar research. For example, even whether the photo has square or rounded edges
can be significant, as can whether you can see the feet of the person in the photo, and
whether the woman's hair is visible or not. And that's before you get to the style
and fashion of the clothes. There are sites prepared by experts which can give you
guidance. As you have obviously gathered, when the photographer was in business (and
where) also helps.
Please also bear in mind that some photos are later copied (I found one of my great great
grandfather from circa 1859 which had been inadvertently reversed left-right in what must
have been a later copying still in carte-de-viste format.)
