Thank you for your e-mail. I fear there may be some confusion of
URLs here. Peter Higgingbottom's
website
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ is a superb source of
information about the poor law in England and Wales; that was where I
found some of the information I quoted in my earlier posting. The website
www.institutions.org appears to have been abandoned, as it was last
updated in August 2007, and has very little information.
I have now established that there was a poorhouse in Cardiff in 1610
(shown on Speed's map of Cardiff - thanks to James Phillips-Jones for
this info) but have no idea whether this is the same as the one
mentioned in a government report of 1777. I feel a visit to
Glamorgan Archives coming on, but not until the current spell of
Weather has run its course!
